Chesterfield Sofas: A Buyer's Guide to the Classic Button-Tufted Lounge

Chesterfield Sofas: A Buyer's Guide to the Classic Button-Tufted Lounge

A Chesterfield sofa is a lounge with deep diamond button-tufting, rolled arms that sit level with the back, and a low, solid frame. It has stayed popular for well over a century because it suits almost any room and holds up to everyday use.

At Demir Leather, we have ten leather Chesterfield designs in our Auburn and Chatswood showrooms. This guide covers what makes a true Chesterfield, the main styles, the best material, sizes, colours and care.

What makes a true Chesterfield sofa?

A true Chesterfield sofa has four features:

  • Deep diamond button-tufting across the back and arms, and sometimes the seat and base.

  • Rolled or scroll arms that usually sit at the same height as the back.

  • A low back and deep seat, which gives it a wide, grounded look.

  • A solid frame on turned feet, a plinth base or slim metal legs.

The popular story links the name to the 4th Earl of Chesterfield in 18th-century England, though the history is not well documented.

Classic vs modern Chesterfield sofa styles

Every Chesterfield shares the tufting and rolled arms. What changes is the base, the arm shape and how much of the sofa is tufted.

  • Classic: Azzurro has rolled scroll arms and turned wooden feet. Velour keeps the scroll arms on slender tapered legs.

  • Modern: Belmont pairs tufting with boxy arms and angled metal legs. Katharina sits on angled chrome legs, and Origini has a curved shape and brass-tone legs in full-grain Italian leather.

  • Statement: Bellagio and Sovereign are tufted all over on a plinth base. Marquis has polished ball feet, Venere a curved, wave-like back, and Opera tufting right down the front.

Chesterfield sofa material: why leather is the classic choice

Leather is the traditional Chesterfield sofa material. Deep tufting pulls the upholstery tight around every button, and leather holds that shape far better than most fabrics. A leather Chesterfield sofa also wipes clean easily and softens with age.

Our Chesterfields are upholstered in genuine leather, and Origini uses full-grain Italian leather. Learn more in our guides to leather grades and how to spot a fake leather sofa.

Fabric and velvet Chesterfields feel softer, but dust collects around the buttons and they are harder to clean.

Sizes and colours

Most of our Chesterfields come in three sizes:

  • 1-seater: a reading chair, or a pair facing a larger sofa.

  • Chesterfield sofa 2 seater: ideal for apartments and smaller living rooms.

  • 3 seater Chesterfield sofa: the main sofa for a family living room.

Rolled arms add width, so measure your room and doorways first. Our sofa sizing guide shows you how.

Each leather lounge comes in a choice of 20 leather colours. A brown leather Chesterfield sofa gives the heritage look, while a black Chesterfield sofa feels sharp and modern. Cream, grey or green make it feel fresh.

Every Chesterfield is made to order, with delivery about 3 to 4 months from purchase. Delivery is $350 in Sydney metro and $500 elsewhere in Australia.

Styling and caring for your Chesterfield

Let the sofa lead and keep the rest of the room simple. Pair a black or grey Chesterfield with clean lines and metal finishes for a modern room, or brown leather with timber and warm lamps for a classic one. Two or three plain cushions are enough, since the tufting already adds texture. Complete the look with a coffee table or ottoman.

To care for it, dust the creases around each button with a soft brush, wipe spills straight away and condition the leather every few months. Keep it out of strong direct sun. Follow our leather sofa care checklist.

Frequently asked questions

1) What is a Chesterfield sofa?

A Chesterfield sofa is a lounge with deep diamond button-tufting, rolled arms level with the back, a low back and a solid frame. It comes in classic and modern styles.

2) What is the best material for a Chesterfield sofa?

Leather is the most popular Chesterfield sofa material. It holds the tufting well, wipes clean easily and softens with age. Fabric is softer but harder to clean around the buttons.

3) Are Chesterfield sofas comfortable?

Yes, though they feel firmer and more upright than a deep modular lounge. For a softer sit, choose a design with deep seat cushions, such as Velour or Venere.

4) Does a Chesterfield sofa suit a modern home?

Yes. A modern Chesterfield sofa uses metal legs, boxier arms or a plinth base. Belmont, Katharina and Origini suit contemporary homes.

5) How long does it take to get a Chesterfield sofa from Demir Leather?

Our Chesterfields are made to order, with delivery about 3 to 4 months from purchase. Delivery is $350 in Sydney metro and $500 to other Australian locations.
